Summer in India lasts anywhere from 3 to 5 months between February and July, across the country. Temperatures can reach a scorching 50 C in parts of Northern India and humidity can reach an uncomfortable peak, especially in coastal regions. However, with appropriate care, children can be kept comfortable and illness-free during this period.
Whether you have a baby, a toddler or a young teenager, these simple tips can help keep children cool in Summer.
- Dress them in cool, cotton fabrics that allow the body to breathe. For boys, shorts, loose-fitting capri pants and soft tee-shirts will work. Girls can be attired in light cotton frocks, tee-shirts and shorts/ track pants. In addition to minimising sweat, these clothes will also keep uncomfortable prickly heat and other rashes at bay. There are sporty wear options for kids which are equally effective in keeping them protected from the sun. However, these can be on the expensive side, so purchasing them would depend on your budget.
- Young babies should have their heads covered with lightweight sun hats. Older kids can wear caps to protect them from the intense sun.
- Lightweight and comfortable footwear like sandals or slippers are ideal for kids, as they will reduce sweating of the feet, thus avoiding embarrassment or unpleasant odours.
- When playing outdoors, ensure that you avoid the peak heat hours of 10 am to 4 pm. This is when the UV rays are at their most damaging and the heat can cause kids to suffer from heat stroke.
- Children who participate in active sports such as swimming or contact sports like football must wear sunscreen with an SPF of 15-30. Anything with a higher SPF does not necessarily translate to better protection. Good brands for kids include those which have proven anti-allergic properties. Always check with your paediatrician before using a suntan lotion on your children.
